... the first Smackdown! after No Mercy 2002, which had been witness to Brock Lesnar defeating the Undertaker in a devastating Hell in a Cell...

... I seem to remember on that night that the Undertaker started to tell the audience that they'd been great to him, and started hinting that his career was winding down a little, and the fans started screaming, as if to stop him, and the Big Show came running out and beat the hell out of the Undertaker, injuring him for a while and creating a future feud between the two... Which cemented Show's place as Brock's #1 Contender as a heel to a newly face Brock Lesnar...

Anybody else remember that night?!

Well... That was over three years ago... Was the Undertaker seriously considering retirement then? If so, why is he continuing to put it off with more and more of these "deaths" and "returns," especially with Randy Orton?

No he wasnt gonna retire, he was carrying an Injury, and that was a way to write him out of storylines for 3 months so he could get surgery on his Elbow, then came back and feuded with The Big Show.

I doubt Taker will be retireing for at least a few more years yet, I see 1 more Title reign before he calls it quits.

He is still a big name and I think with certain guys out of the business through leaving or other reasons, Taker still very much has a place on SD and within WWE.

Wow, how ironic that I get to read this when there are rumors again making the round that the Undertaker will retire in 2010. But then again, there were already rumors in 2009 and from what I know not much came of it. E.g.:

I guess such rumors always pop up with wrestlers of the older generation. Personally I think it might be a good idea to have the Undertaker retire soon in some sort of grand finale, albeit it be a great loss nonetheless.
