STOPPING POP UP ADS WHILE BROWSING
« Thread started on: Aug 27th, 2003, 09:53am » |

Stopping pop up's with Software (please note, THE SHRINE BBS is not affiliated with these company's nor do we suggest a preference.) Using a popup blocker with this forum is not permitted. You will receive an error message and the ad will load in the same window.
FOR INTERNET EXPLORER
Pop-Up Stopper(tm) 2.4 - over 1.5 million users world-wide! and its FREE.
Popup Ad Filter (PAF) is the first and the only anti-popup product that can block 100% annoying popup ads automatically while never interfering with your navigation.
Proxomitron. Keep pop-up windows from opening. This handy utility can also be set to banish banners, counters, music, and other unwanted Web elements.
FOR NETSCAPE AND INTERNET EXPLORER
POW! A simple utility, just run it while browsing on the net, and when one of those nasty popups appears, POW! will automatically close it for you... It's that easy!
Don't Panic! 4.0 New Release with AOL Support! Quickly hide personal documents, browser windows and more from the screen and the taskbar Complete browser pop-up control for Internet Explorer and Netscape users.
STOPPING POPUP ADS BY CHANGING YOUR BROWSER SETTINGS
Instead of using Software you can disable your Browsers settings for Java scripting or Active Scripting.
Web sites need you to have this enabled to do things like pop up's.
Please note that by disabling you could stop some of the web sites you normally visit from working correctly, e.g. Hotmail.
My advice is try it out and see. It can be a little tricky if you have never tinkered with the settings before but once you've learned it's simple.
Check out Netscape and Microsoft dedicated web sites for more information.
For Netscape Navigator 3.x
Go to "Options | Network Preferences..." from the main menu Change to the "Languages" tab To enable: make sure "Enable Java" check box is checked To disable: make sure "Enable Java" check box is unchecked "Reload" the page, or if that doesn't work (it usually does) restart the browser
For Netscape Communicator 4.x
Go to "Edit | Preferences..." from the main menu Select "Advanced" panel To enable: make sure "Enable Java" check box is checked. To disable: make sure "Enable Java" check box is unchecked. "Reload" the page, or if that doesn't work (it usually does) restart the browser
For Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.x
Go to "View | Options..." from the main menu Change to the "Security" tab To enable: make sure "Enable Java programs" check box is checked To disable: make sure "Enable Java programs" check box is unchecked "Reload" the page, or if that doesn't work (it usually does) restart the browser
For Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x
Go to "View | Internet Options..." from the main menu Change to the "Security" tab Select "Custom" and click on the "Settings..." button To Enable: make sure "Enable" is selected under "Scripting|Active Scripting." To Disable: make sure "Disable" is selected under "Scripting|Active Scripting." "Refresh" the page, or if that doesn't work (it usually does) restart the browser
For Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x
Go to "Tools | Internet Options..." from the main menu Change to the "Security" tab Click "Custom Level..." button To Enable: make sure "Enable" is selected under "Scripting|Active Scripting." To Disable: make sure "Disable" is selected under "Scripting|Active Scripting." "Refresh" the page, or if that doesn't work (it usually does) restart the browser

Which one are you using? I can't endorse you using one with this forum myself (cos the ads are a part of the terms and conditions) but it might be nice to have a recommendation of which one you went for? :booze:

I would recommend using a different browser with a built in popup stopper for general sites which have alot of popups. It's much easier because you don't have to do alot of configuration before it's set up, and it's great for free-site hosted places which can sometimes go a bit pop-up happy.
My browser to recommend for this purpose would be PHOENIX. If you would like to download it then please click HERE.
You will need to make another couple of tiny downloads to make Java applets work and will also need to Shockwave plugin again - but when they are needed you will get a prompt and a direct link to where to download them from.
Hope you guys like it.

I recommend... MAKING THIS AN OXFEZ ENDORSED PRODUCT...
...getting the Spyware Remover.
Because I visit so many web pages of ill-repute, I get a lot of shit on my computer, especially my work one.
This Spyware remover also removes Adware, which can randomly activate pop-ups on your system... Adware is fucking irritating, Spyware is fucking nosy.
Kill them both with this thing... it's totally FREE
Did you hear me..... IT'S FREE!
It will also immunize your system against future incursions.

I actually kinda enjoy the popups, there's only two and it's something to do while the page is loading (close them) hehe

Missy - you are weird, hehe
Joe - there is a program called AdAware which is also free and tells you which sites are trying to set cookies when you click the links and gives you an option to decline them - that is really useful for sites which just use it to gather info about you.
Just don't click 'no' to these forums when you first login though or you won't be able to login or have the option of changing to the lite forum...
